Security corps at Las Americas International Airport (AILA) have confiscated a major shipment of cocaine intended for export to an undisclosed destination. El Dia reports that yesterday's operation was carried out in coordination with members of the National Drug Control Department (DNCD) and the Specialized Airport Security Corps (CESA).

DNCD president, Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo personally directed the swoop. El Dia reports that several employees at the cargo terminal at AILA were arrested. Reportedly, the cocaine had been warehoused at the cargo terminal. El Dia reports that the investigation was triggered on 20 November when cocaine packages weighing 17.6 kilos were confiscated from an Italian passenger at the airport. El Dia reports the cocaine had been stored in an official's office. The DNCD did not act on the information hoping to arrest the officer with more evidence.

El Caribe reports that 145 packages, presumably of heroin and cocaine, were confiscated on a cargo plane that had arrived from Puerto Rico. Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo said that all the staff of the DNCD and CESA on duty at the time was arrested for investigation. The pilot and copilot of the airplane, both US citizens, were also arrested.

According to a source quoted by El Caribe, US$70,000 was found in a vehicle of one of the DNCD officers who is being linked to the shipment.

The plane had arrived from Puerto Rico at 3pm and was scheduled to return at 8pm. It is a Short-360 of the Air Cargo Carriers company. Inside the packages were found camouflaged in the roof and floor of the plane. Assistant prosecutors Jesus Jimenez and Henry Arias acted in the case and are investigating whether the drugs were loaded at the terminal, as reported in El Caribe.
