The National Statistics Office (ONE) reported yesterday that work by census takers in the IX Population and Housing Census had intensified over the weekend as planned, increasing the number of households covered, because many people were at home.

In a press conference at the ONE headquarters, director Pablo Tactuk said that the problems that initially arose had been dealt with, thanks to the personnel working on the census data. He forecast that the preliminary results would be released sometime in January or February and the final data some ten months later. Tactuk specified that the census takers would receive RD$900 per day, the area supervisors RD$1,170, and managers would receive RD$26,400 for the entire period. He said that ONE had prepared 16,000 mobile phones in order to stay in contact with the teams.

Although the IX Census was going on yesterday, Diario Libre reporters took a trip around the capital but only spotted three census takers. Miguel Urena was knocking on a door in Ensanche La Fe. He said that as of 10am from December 1, he had interviewed more than 40 families. Denis Duarte, another census taker in the same area, also said he did not have any complaints about the public response. Yesterday he had taken data from 47 houses.
