On Friday afternoon, the magistrates of the Third Collegiate Tribunal of the National District handed out jail sentences totaling 323 years for 16 of the 22 defendants in the notorious Paya Massacre case. They were sentenced to serve jail terms ranging from 3 to 30 years, the maximum permitted under Dominican penal law. The remaining six defendants were declared not guilty.
Luis de Jesus Lara Martinez, Jose Luis Montas (El Duro Motors), former Navy colonels Ricardo Guzman Perez and Miguel Pena Figuereo, former Major Eduardo Mayobanex Rodriguez Montero, Antonio Manuel Roche Pineda and Jorge Luis Chalas received 30-year sentences for the killing of the Colombian drug traffickers in the southwestern town of Paya, in Peravia (Bani) province in August 2008. They will serve their sentences in the San Francisco de Macoris, La Victoria, Najayo, 15 de Azua and Monte Plata prisons.
