Winter has come early, according to residents of the Central Mountain Range. People in the country's mountainous center are dusting off their coats and blankets because of the cold nighttime and early morning temperatures. In the Juan Bautista Perez Rancier (Valle Nuevo) National Park temperatures as low as -2 or -3 Celsius have been reported.

At the same time the cold attracts tourists in search of this unusual experience. Listin Diario quotes regional tourism manager Juan Marun Taktuk as saying, "This week we've had minimum temperatures of 7.2 degrees and we know that in Valle Nuevo it's gone down to 2 below zero. Many people come to enjoy this cold, because it's so unusual for a warm region like the Caribbean".

Local people, meanwhile, have had to use coal burning stoves and bonfires to keep warm. The National Meteorological Office (ONAMET) says that the low temperatures will persist for the time being, as a result of the prevailing north-eastern winds.
