The production of the Integrated Textbooks from the first year to the eighth grade of primary school and the other teaching and technological materials pending delivery involve an investment of US$5,230,619 by the Ministry of Education. This is set out in a contract signed between the Minister of Education, Melanio Paredes, and the director general of the Latin American Institute of Educational Communication (ILCE), Jose Luis Espinosa Pina, on 17 March 2009.
Diario Libre said that the money was paid in installments and consists of a five-part project, with the creation of the integrated texts and their components as the second part. Of the materials, only about 1000 of the integrated textbooks have been delivered, and these belong to the first cycle of primary education. According to the points of the contract, besides the integrated textbooks, the ILCE should produce the teaching guides for the teachers, 254 five-minute videos and 254 fifteen-minute programs for transmission to classrooms, which have yet to be delivered. As well as the investment in the texts, the ministry spent around RD$560 million on updating technological resources in the schools by installing plasma screen televisions, replacing broken computers and contracting Internet access.
