In a bid to improve bilateral measures and tackle cholera more effectively, President Leonel Fernandez and his Haitian counterpart Rene Preval will hold a meeting in the Dominican Republic next week, possibly on Tuesday, although the date and the exact location of their meeting are yet to be confirmed.

Fernandez met with Haitian Prime Minister Jean Max Bellerive at his office in the Presidential Palace yesterday to make the necessary arrangements. Diario Libre reports that the Public Health ministers from both countries, Bautista Rojas Gomez and Alex Larsen also took part in the meeting, after which they held a press conference.

Bellerive said that the meeting would consist of a conference of the Mixed Dominican-Haitian Commission, headed by both presidents who plan to join forces to fight the disease. He said that Preval had sent him to the Dominican Republic to discuss this and other issues, and that he would report back on what was agreed with Fernandez, especially the date set for the bilateral meeting. The Haitian premier, accompanied by Rojas Gomez and other officials, said that after seeing the efforts that the Dominican authorities have made to control the incidence of cholera in the country, they (the Haitians) want to join in these preventive actions.
