The legislation for the 2011 Budget and Law of Public Spending remained on the table yesterday, after the Senate put off its hearing until tomorrow. The Senate reacted to a demand for the inclusion of the funds for the construction of the dam at Monte Grande in Barahona in the line items of the budget. Diario Libre said that the decision was approved after Senate president Reinaldo Pared Perez suggested postponing the consideration to Friday at 10am as he accepted a request made by Amable Aristy Castro from La Altagracia. "The US$50 million (the cost of the dam) should be reduced from the Metro, which has a lot of money", said Aristy Castro as he pointed out that "they don't have two-thirds" in the Chamber of Deputies, in a clear allusion to the PLD legislators. The senator from La Altagracia proposed taking "one or two days" to discuss the inclusion of the funds for this project with President Leonel Fernandez.

The request was supported by Pedernales senator Dionis Sanchez, who is also president of the Joint Commission that studied the budget. The funds for the dam were not included in the original Budget proposal or in any of the proposals for modifications (addendums) that were presented in yesterday's Senate session. Despite this exclusion, President Fernandez inaugurated the project in July. The dam, which will benefit the provinces of Independencia, Bahoruco, Barahona and Pedernales, will also help reduce the frequent flooding caused by heavy rainfall in the hurricane season.
