The Ministry of Public Works has started work on the US$71 million dollar highway linking Jarabacoa with El Rio. According to Hoy, the highway will use the latest in construction technology. The MPW report says that work has started on the first six kilometers of the roadway that lead to the dumping grounds where the materials removed from the mountainside will be deposited. The ministry said that preliminary studies in the area established that in order to maintain the stability of the slopes along the roadside, they will need to place concrete slabs anchored with 8 to 10-meter steel pieces every two meters, perpendicular to the slope of the hillside. Given this situation, Hoy newspaper says that the construction company has decided to stabilize the slopes using steel mesh coated with concrete. The new highway will have proper drainage and terraced setbacks to contain the mountain and possible landslides.
