The Dominican Winter League Baseball Tournament dedicated to Jose Lima and the victims of the 11 January Rio Verde plane crash (in 1948) is entering the last phase before the playoffs begin. Last night the Leones del Escogido handed the visiting Gigantes del Cibao a 10-3 defeat. Once again pitcher Yuneski Maya dominated the opposing batters while the Leones belted out 14 hits. In San Pedro de Macoris, the Estrellas' star pitcher Radhames Liz limited the visiting Tigres del Licey to just four hits in seven innings and the Estrellas went on to win 3-1, in a game played in the Tetelo Vargas Stadium. In Santiago's famous Estadio Cibao, the Aguilas Cibaenas, struggling to reach .500, received the visiting Toros del Este, the tournament leaders. The result was not good for the hometown favorites as Alejandro de Aza hit a bases loaded homerun to break up a tight game in the fifth inning, giving the Toros a 6-1 lead, that eventually led to an 8-3 triumph.
In the meantime, the league is going to decide the case of the protested game between the Leones del Escogido and the Aguilas Cibaenas in which the Aguilas used a pitcher who was apparently not on the official roster. The decision could cost the Aguilas their 2-1 victory over the Leones.
