DA pledges to pursue case of beaten sergeant

Santiago District Attorney Yenni Berenice Reynoso has told reporters that she will pursue the case against Lt. Colonel Manuel de la Cruz Martinez who is accused of assaulting Sergeant Mildred Andrea Cepeda. Both persons are members of the National Police. The District Attorney said that once the prosecutors are empowered with a case, the District Attorney could not refuse to proceed with it, because a complaint was filed. The case revolves around the sergeant's refusal to hand over a detainee to the colonel, who also happens to be the son of the commanding general of the Central Command of the National Police, General Juan Ramon de la Cruz Martinez. According to El Nuevo Diario, the colonel ordered a SWAT team to deal with the sergeant who suffered severe blows to her clavicle and ribs.
