In a ceremony held in Bavaro last week, the Embassy of Canada, from their office in Punta Cana, together with the Royal Life Saving Society of Nova Scotia, Air Transat Holidays, Westjet, Occidental Grand Punta Cana, Seapro and HPH Services marked the completion of a successful lifesaving training course for employees of several hotels and companies in the Bavaro - Punta Cana area with four Canadian instructors from Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Over a period of two weeks, the Canadian instructors trained 65 personnel, including six members of the Tourist Police (POLITUR), in two four-day sessions. The course was organized by the Canadian Embassy to provide a safer environment for Canadian families and tourists from all over the world who visit the Dominican Republic. The local community will also benefit from these new lifeguards.

At the end of the course, the trainees said they felt proud of having taken part in this event and looked forward to putting the knowledge they acquired into practice. Employees from the Punta Cana Consular Office along with the instructors presented Bronze Cross, Bronze Medallion and Bronze Star certificates to the participants. This is the second year that this training has taken place. This program first started in Puerto Plata on the north coast, another major destination for Canadian tourists.

The Embassy of Canada opened its doors in Punta Cana just over a year ago, due to the great influx of Canadian tourists in the area. At the moment, the country receives approximately 750,000 Canadian tourists per year, with a large number visiting Bavaro-Punta Cana.
