President Leonel Fernandez and his Haitian counterpart, President Rene Preval, will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, at the Presidential Palace to discuss measures for tackling the cholera epidemic affecting both countries. The presidential meeting was set up last week with Haitian Prime Minister Jean Max Bellerive, and the ministers of Public Health from both countries, Bautista Rojas Gomez and Alex Larsen.
Diario Libre reports that Fernandez and Preval will announce joint measures for preventing the spread of cholera on both sides of the frontier. For this campaign, the ministers of Health in Haiti and the Dominican Republic will devise a joint strategy on cholera with the aim of reducing the number of people affected. Prime Minister Bellerive said that the Haitian authorities wanted to join in the Dominican efforts to control the incidence of cholera in its territory as well as evaluating all aspects of the disease. He said that they are installing treatment centers for cholera on the Haitian side of the frontier and in several points in the area, as the Dominican authorities have done.
