The most recent Gallup-Hoy poll shows that there has been a significant fall in President Leonel Fernandez's popularity, and his apparent re-election ambitions were rejected by more than two thirds of the people who responded to the poll.

Nonetheless, the political opposition does not appear to be capable of capitalizing on this. One important element that seems to be emerging is the rising popularity of Danilo Medina, who overtook the President and the First Lady in the polls for the first time.

However, 56% of those who identified themselves as PLD supporters did say that they favored Fernandez. The newspaper says that these results have a negative effect on the President and on his government's image, at levels comparable to the public disapproval for the Presidential pardon for banker Vivian Lubrano and the Plan Renove participants, along with a big fiscal deficit and the Sun Land decision by the Supreme Court.

The poll showed that 80% of the people think that things are going from bad to worse, and 61% said that their own economic situation was "bad". A total of 67% of the people saw the government as "corrupt" and even more so than the year before. Over 61% did not think that they were safe, a rate of 12% more than the year before.
