PRD presidential hopeful Luis Abinader officially withdrew his nomination bid yesterday and signed an alliance agreement to support former President Hipolito Mejia's nomination bid. In his speech as he signed his pact with Mejia, Abinader said that he was withdrawing his nomination attempt as he looked at the internal polls and recognizing that the former President "is the leader who knows the roads to triumph, who knows that we have to get together inside and outside in order to win".
"We cannot risk losing the presidential elections once again, or repeating what happened in the last congressional and municipal elections. You don't go forward by losing", he said.
Diario Libre reported that Mejia has said that Abinader's proposals coincide with his own "what to do and who to do it in order for this country to work" and announced that he (Abinader) will be his vice-presidential candidate in his candidacy for 2012.
In the pact, signed during an event held in the Dominican Fiesta Hotel, both men committed themselves to fight for PRD unity under the banner of PRD party statutes, internal discipline and the proper functioning of the party organs. They promised, moreover, that in a government headed by both men, they would comply with the Constitution, prioritize investment in education, promote investment of local and foreign capital, redirect the coverage of the social programs and respect the environment.
