A meeting between Haitian President Rene Preval and his Dominican counterpart Leonel Fernandez set for today has been cancelled and no date was given for a new meeting. Apparently the current election crisis in Haiti, together with the cholera outbreak, has made it politically unsafe for Preval to travel. Haitian Prime Minister Jean Max Bellerive announced the meeting last week, as an opportunity for the two governments to work together on the cholera crisis and other border related issues.

According to El Caribe, the epidemic in Haiti has cost more than 2,300 lives and affected more than 100,000 people. In the Dominican Republic no deaths have yet been reported and the number of cholera cases is listed at 32 that according to the Panamerican Health Organization is atypically low re spreading of cholera.
