Caucedo Port, used for transshipments of cargo from South America, has become a known shipping point for narcotics contraband to Europe, as reported in El Dia. Venezuela is mentioned in the news report as one source where the cocaine packages are prepared. The report says that it appears that many smuggling operations are successful, mentioning that the arrests at the terminal are not frequent. A recent shipment of 80 packages was confiscated on Thursday and two people are under arrest, according to Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo, head of the National Drug Control Department (DNCD). The confiscations of drugs at the terminal date back to a first announced in September 2006, when Major General Rafael Radhames Ramirez Ferreira was in charge of the DNCD.
At that time, a shipment of 2,250 kilos of cocaine was confiscated, when the new X-ray equipment began operating. The system has enabled the confiscation of around 6,000 kilograms of cocaine since then, as reported in El Dia.
