Writing in today's Listin Diario, Father Juan Linares, who heads the exemplary Muchachos y Muchachas con Don Bosco children and youth program, comments on the contrasts in the use of government funds. He says that he hosted the visit by a director of an NGO that supports the program who observed the long hours of blackouts the center suffered. He had just passed the Presidential Palace and seen it fully lit up with Christmas decorations, and commented on the contrast.
Father Linares also observes that in a recent visit to the Presidential Palace to review the support the government would provide for the program in the 2011 Budget he learned that the budget had been left the same as last year, which he said would affect the opening of a new center to assist pregnant teenagers. But on the way out he observed a pick-up vehicle loaded with Christmas gift baskets filled to the brim with the expensive gifts. "I then thought of the demonstrations of support for 4% of the budget to education and I thought of the response the authorities have given saying there is no money. Money there is, but one has to see where the money is going".
