The PLD majority of deputies voted in favor of passing the 2011 National Budget as presented by the Presidency. The budget total is RD$390 billion. The budget included an addendum assigning 30% of surplus revenues in 2011 to education.
The first reading was passed with the vote of 99 deputies of the PLD and its ally, the PRSC. Only six voted against it. Meanwhile, 57 PRD legislators abstained.
A second reading is expected to pass in the session today. Members of the 200-organization strong Coalition for Dignified Education said they would continue their campaign for the government to increase funding to comply with the Education Law 66-97, or 16% of the National Budget, equivalent to 4% of GDP.
