Bus drivers covering the Santiago-Dajabon route have noticed that their Haitian passengers seem to have decided to not go home for the holidays. With the cholera outbreak in Haiti, many Haitians have apparently decided they are better off staying on this side of the island to avoid problems while making the crossing. Border controls have been stepped up this year following the cholera outbreak, making it more difficult or more costly for Haitians to cross over. As reported in Listin Diario, Juan Marte, of the CNTT public transport union says that traffic this time of the year normally tripled or quadrupled but that this has not happened this year. The Santiago-Dajabon route is used by Haitians who live in Cibao Central region. Marte said that traffic normally picks up as of 10 December, with additional bus units added, but this has not happened this year. He said the situation even affects people with visas to the DR.
