On Friday no baseball games were played because the Player's Federation decided that the Dominican Professional League (Lidom) suspension of pitcher Wilkins Arias had been unfair. The League had ordered Arias be expelled for the rest of the championship and penalized with RD$25,000 for playing in a game when he was not on the Aguilas Cibaenas team roster. Arias had pitched to one batter.

The work stoppage was announced by Mario Melvin Soto after he left a meeting with the League. Soto, president of the Player's Federation, said that he explained the position of the ball players and he added that until a written document revoking the punishment given to Arias was produced, there would be no baseball that night or any night.

It was revealed that the league commission had, in fact, revoked the suspension of Arias, but there was not enough time to get the document written up and signed. As a result, no games were played on Friday.

The decision was particularly unfortunate for the Estrellas Orientales. The team was celebrating tits 100th anniversary.

The League and the Player's Federation agreed to end the crisis, and on Saturday, games were played in San Francisco de Macoris, San Pedro de Macoris and in Santo Domingo.

In San Francisco de Macoris, the Gigantes kept hold of 4th place in the standings by defeating the hapless Tigres del Licey, 5-1, and reaching the .500 mark for the first time. Francisco Cruceta was the winning pitcher in relief.

The Aguilas Cibaenos, the other team fighting to stay in the playoffs, defeated the Estrellas Orientales by a score of 5-3 in the Tetelo Vargas Stadium in San Pedro de Macoris. Tony Pena Jr. got the victory in relief, while John Halama, Mario Alvarez, Derrick Loop also took the mound. The Aguilas came back from a three-run deficit to put together a 5-run rally in the 8th inning with two out to take the victory.

In Santo Domingo's venerable Estadio Quisqueya, the Toros del Este shut out the Leones del Escogido 1-0 in a great ballgame. The pitching of Aneury Rodriguez and the timely hit by Pedro Ciriaco were all that the Toros needed to take the win. The win guarantees a spot in the semi-final playoffs for the Toros.

On Sunday, the public did not really want to see the retirement of their most prolific hitter, Luis Polonia, who bowed out gracefully, playing his last game in the Aguilas uniform after 27 seasons. The Aguilas won the game against the Gigantes and took over 4th place in the standings. Once again, it was TJ Pena getting the win in relief. The Aguilas had taken a 6-2 lead early in the game but lost it, only to come back with three runs in the eighth inning to take the victory. The win puts the Aguilas at .500, a remarkable feat for manager Tony Pena.

Escogido qualified for semi-finals with yet another victory over the Tigres del Licey 8-7 in the Estadio Quisqueya. The Tigres lost their 7th game in a row, their longest losing streak this season.

Over in La Romana, the Estrellas beat the Toros and earned their pass to the round-robin portion of the tournament. The two teams played a double header. The Estrellas won the first game 6-5, and the Toros won the second game (8-0 as the papers went to press).
