The higher cost of the traditional Dominican Christmas bread known as 'telera' is not tied to the cost of wheat flour. According to Listin Diario, the average cost of a large bag of flour has been RD$1,024 for the whole year. During the last three months of 2009 the prices of that same bag was RD$1,137.36, so there was a slight decrease in the price of flour. Recently the president of the small and medium-sized bakeries association announced a RD$10 peso increase, from RD$50 to RD$60 for a loaf of telera bread. He said that it was not the flour, but rather all the other ingredients that go into making the bread that is traditionally eaten around Christmas time.
