Yuber Enrique Mendez Mendez (Oreganito), believed to be Puerto Rican Jose Figueroa Agosto's right-hand man, became just another prisoner wanted in extradition by the United States authorities. Mendez was arrested while traveling in a Toyota Hilux pickup truck on Sunday.
Diario Libre says that the prisoner was named in an organizational chart of the Figueroa Agosto network that was released by the National Drug Control Department (DNCD), the National Police and the Attorney General of the Republic last January.
With the capture of the alleged capo, 25 people have fallen into the hands of Dominican and Puerto Rican justice, in addition to at least seven people who were killed in an alleged cleanup operation of the former fugitive's network.
The head of the DNCD, Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo, revealed yesterday that with this capture, the network has been completely dismantled.
According to the DNCD (the National Drug Control Department), "Oreganito" has assets that exceed RD$5 billion as a result of his activities. These assets are located in Bayaguana, in Monte Plata province, in the city of Azua, in the National District and in the municipality of Santo Domingo East.
An extradition request was filed by the judicial authorities in the New York Southern District Court on charges of conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute of five or more kilograms of a detectible quantity of cocaine.
As reported in Listin Diario, he was arrested after the authorities established the key role he played in the drug trafficking network.
Mendez signed his voluntary extradition to the US arguing that he is innocent and does not know Jose David Figueroa Agosto, as reported in Hoy.
El Caribe reports that this is the same man to whom the DNCD had confiscated weapons and half a kilo of cocaine in a farm in Monte Plata a year ago. The DNCD did not explain why Mendez Mendez was not in jail.
