The regular series of the Dominican Winter League Championship has come to an end, sort of. Because of a game that was cancelled by the league officials, the Aguilas and the Leones will play one game tonight. If the Aguilas win, they then have to play a one-game playoff with the Gigantes del Cibao in San Francisco de Macoris. Only then can the round-robin section of the tournament get underway.
Last night the Aguilas staged a tenacious battle with the Estrellas Orientales and came out ahead in the eleventh inning after Edwin Encarnacion hit a line drive into the left field wall to drive in Hector Luna from second base and leave the Estrellas in the field with no place to go. The win brought the Aguilas back to .500 only .010 behind the Gigantes del Cibao with a game yet to be played.
In other action last night, the Leones del Escogido, behind the excellent pitching of Edwin Valdez, defeated the Toros del Este by a score of 6-2, and sealed their third place position in the current playoff standings. Escogido took a five-run lead and was never really threatened.
In Santo Domingo's Estadio Quisqueya, the Gigantes del Cibao continued their fight to get into the playoffs by defeating the rather hapless but still fierce Tigres del Licey 5-4 behind the acceptable pitching of Esteban Yan who notched his second victory of the season.
