Anyone have dates, and good locations? I hear the premiere spot is La Vega and the Capital, but does the action in the North Coast get slower or pick up during this festive week ?

It’s only on the malecon in POP every Sunday afternoon in Feb. The last Sunday event (POP) is probably the best when it comes to the action in the north. Not sure who has the grand final event in February 2011 (La Vega or SDG). That I understand is crazy and on the wild side.

I went to the last carnaval in POP last year. It was towards the end of March. Great parade and tens of thousands of people -- it was four or 5 people deep the whole length of the malecon...I'm definitely plan on attending it again this year.

You mean February, right?

They had small parades here in Sosua and Charimicols.

No, it was like the 3rd week in March, and I am positive about that.

Carnival is celebrated the entire month of February filling each weekend with parades, events and competitions. The celebration climaxes on or near the 27th of February, Dominican Independence Day.:)
Could the event you witnessed be possibly the Brugal Music Festival at the end of the Malecon?

Listen, I didn't arrive in the DR on that trip until March 9, 2010. The last carnival date in POP this year was March 21. I know it's later than most of the other carnival dates in February but that's when it was....end of story....

I don't have a horse in this race BUT, I think you may be right. My birthday is the 26th of Feb so I always celebrate Carnival. Just so happened in DR it STARTED on the 27th of Feb 2010. I'll be there the first week of Feb this year to celebrate. I understand it will be back to it's regular Feb time slot.

The Carnival parade in Puerto Plata this year was on the weekend of Feb. 20/21, Sosua was in March (the 13th?) and the "real" carnival is in LA Vega on the correct/actual date of Feb 27 and all the other towns do theirs around this.

YouTube - CARNAVAL DE PUERTO PLATA 2010

Read the date on the youtube page...posted Feb 22/10

Also Carnival in Puerto Plata his celebrated on weekends from Feb 7 thru March 21....so...since it was the last day they were likely whooping it up in the streets. Not all that much happened in Sosua for theirs but in PP it's a bigger deal.

"The Carnival organising committee in Puerto Plata (UCAPPLATA) recently announced at a public meeting, to which the press was invited, that this year's carnival would start on Sunday 7 February, and continue until Sunday 21 March. Activities will be organised every weekend between these dates, at various locations."
