Former President Salvador Jorge Blanco died on Sunday, 26 December at 3:30am. He was in coma for 37 days. He was hospitalized at the Abel Gonzalez Clinic for Advanced Medicine on 19 November when he suffered a cerebral edema after falling off his bed. He was operated twice by neurosurgeons Jose Joaquin Puello and Giancarlo Hernandez, but never recovered.
According to Diario Libre, after being in a coma for 18 days, the former President was disconnected from the artificial respirator that kept him alive, and from then on, he was breathing on his own. He was sent home on 21 December. He lived at Boy Scouts 28 in Naco.
He is survived by his two children, Orlando Jorge Mera and Dilia Leticia Jorge Mera. His wife, Asela Mera died in 2007.
Orlando is the secretary general of the Dominican Revolutionary Party.
Jorge Blanco was the country's 40th President, from 1982-86, running on the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) ticket. A professional and outstanding lawyer in his own right, he reached the higher ranks of politicians in the party being named president of the Senate, for the term 1978-1982, and then was voted President on 16 May 1986.
His remains were at a wake at 4pm on Monday at the Blandino Funeral Home and later were relocated to the Casa Nacional of the PRD. The burial will be carried out at first hour of Tuesday. The former President suffered a The Presidency declared three days of national mourning (Decree 717-10), as of Sunday. The flag will be flown at half-staff in all public or official places, including military bases.
The presidential order decrees that the former President shall receive full ceremonial honors that correspond to his position. Moreover, because of the official mourning, the traditional birthday greetings for President Leonel Fernandez were suspended on Sunday at the Presidential Palace.
Jorge Blanco was elected President on 16 May 1982, after defeating President Joaquin Balaguer who sought to be reelected. President Balaguer would succeed him in 1986. Jorge Blanco is the only former President to be taken to court for alleged acts of embezzlement of funds and other crimes. The accusations were dismissed on grounds of insufficient proof. The sentence that called for a 20-year jail term was annulled in 2001 by the Appeals Court in Santo Domingo during the administration of Hipolito Mejia, his party comrade.
