The General Staff of the National Police held a meeting yesterday, Sunday, morning with Ramon Antonio Veras (Negro), during which they dealt with issues related to the involvement of members of the Police in the attempted assassination of his son Jordi and who have yet to be placed at the disposition of the Justice Department.
According to a source close to the course of the investigations, during the meeting Negro Veras reiterated his point of view which he voiced last 16 November during a press conference at the headquarters of the Attorney General of the Republic in the sense that beside those that have been arrested, there are more persons involved in the attempt against his son Jordi, that happened last 16 June at the entrance to Channel 25 of Santiago, on the 16th of August Street, where he was a television show host.
The Diario Libre says that the Santiago lawyer is supposed to have given the General Staff various names of police officers, among them that of Lt. Fernanda Julieta Garcia Urbaez, assigned to the Metropolitan Transit Authority (AMET), who received a telephone call minutes before the attempt on the life of Jordi, from the cell phone of Roberto Zabala Espinosa, the former Police lieutenant and one of the perpetrators of the attempted killing. The "triangulation map" to the number of Zabala Espinosa's cell phone showed that he made the call to the Lieutenant Garcia Urbaez from the same place as the attempted killing, some 30 minutes before it was attempted. Zabala Espinosa was discharged from the Police in 2007 for having taken part in the death of three persons in Duquesa in North Santo Domingo. The police source told Diario Libre that the lieutenant has denied to the investigating commission to reveal what the conversation with Zabala Espinosa was about, and to the same request made by the current Police Chief, Jose Armando Polanco Gomez, she reiterated her refusal.
It seems strange that for her categorical refusal, the officer has not also been investigated by the Justice Department, in spite of the fact that the Santiago District Attorney, Yenny Berenice Reynoso, admitted last Thursday that a female Police officer, assigned to the AMET, was waiting to be investigated. But even more incriminating is the story that reached the Diario Libre, that tells of the Chief of Police demanding that, because of her refusal to say what was talked about with Zabala Espinosa, the lieutenant was prohibited in the act from using the Police uniform, to which Garcia Urbaez is supposed to have answered:"Uh huh, you think this is a pool hall!"
In the face of such insubordination that occurred more than three months ago and her continuing in the ranks of the Police, as trustworthy source let Diario Libre know that the lieutenant is protected in the highest levels of the institution.
"This is a lieutenant that has five stars in a part of her body...you can imagine, in an obvious illusion that her bravado comes together with feeling protected by "leafs" and "stars" (a reference to the 'scrambled eggs' on the visors of high ranking military covers and the stars on their collars). Apparently even in a case so dramatic as this one that has shaken the national conscience. In their meeting yesterday the General Staff heard about the involvement of other officers. It was known that Zabala Espinosa made other phone calls from the location of the attempted assassination.
