The Center for Emergency Operations (COE) and the National Police reported yesterday a total of 46 persons dead during the Christmas holidays. Of the fatalities, 30 were registered within the framework of the Christmas Union Operation 2010-2011 that is headed by the COE, and they were the results of traffic accidents and alcoholic intoxication. The remaining 16 were reported by the Police, as part of the holiday prevention initiative that counted up the homicides.

According to the Bulletin O2-A released by the COE, as of 4pm yesterday, 28 persons lost their lives in traffic accidents and 2 by alcohol intoxication. At the same time the Police reported that 14 murders occurred during fights and only two deaths were related to criminal activity.

Based on the statistics of the Metropolitan Transit Authority (AMET), the COE said that of the traffic fatalities, 11 are motorcyclists that were not wearing helmets. During the Christmas Union Operation there were 79 traffic accidents, 29 cases of alcoholic poisoning, and 8 incidents of food poisoning. These incidents affected 188 persons.

In the meanwhile, the National Police reported that on Christmas Eve, there were five homicides, and 11 on Christmas Day. Of those killed in fights, there is an individual sought by the Police in the area of 27 de Febrero in the National District, as well as the death of an adolescent of 16 who was killed outside a commercial bank located at Kilometer 14 of the Duarte Highway are two that stand out.

The National Police reported that 1,206 vehicles were searched, of which 115 were retained along with 1,221 motorcycles. The Police say that the violent deaths were reduced by 45% in comparison to last year at this time. It is important to stress that the police report does not quantify the number of injured that were the results of similar incidents.
