After a few days off for the Christmas holidays, the baseball guys got back to work on Sunday. The second phase of the Dominican Winter League Tournament, dedicated to Jose Lima and the victims of the Rio Verde crash, is a four-round, round robin session, with the top two survivors going on to the finals.
In San Pedro de Macoris, the hometown Estrellas got a rude awakening from the Leones del Escogido receiving the bad end of a 6-0 whitewash. Right-hander Nerio Rodriguez dominated the first six innings as the Leones built up a lead, starting with two runs in the first inning. Chicago Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro had two RBIs and two hits in the game.
There was no playoff game in Santo Domingo after both of the teams from the "countryside" n Estrellas and Toros topped the standings and therefore played host. In La Romana, hometown of the Toros, things did not work out for that team, either. The Gigantes del Cibao, the last minute classifiers for the round-robin part of the tournament, came from way behind to overtake the Toros del Este and take the win 11-7. At one time, losing by two runs, the Gigantes managed to get three bases on balls, four singles and a double and score 6 runs to take the lead. Pedro Feliz hit a two-run double, Alexis Casilla had a single and two doubles, scored two runs and had two RBIs in the game and Wilson Valdez hit a homerun, scored two runs, stole a base and drove in three runs for the Gigantes.
