President Leonel Vargas awarded Nobel Laureate Mario Vargas Llosa the Order of Christopher Columbus with the Great Cross of Silver for his contributions to world literature in a ceremony at the Presidential Palace yesterday. Vargas Llosa who has lived in the Dominican Republic and vacations here frequently, told the President that he feels Dominican. He commented that his novel, "The Feast of the Ghost," is that which has given him the most satisfaction. He said it was a difficult book to write, but at the same time a fascinating adventure. He sought to capture the ferocity and cruelty of the Trujillo dictatorship.
President Fernandez said that he felt that the Nobel Prize came 20 years late to the author of the "Feast of the Goat".
Culture Minister Jose Rafael Lantigua said that Vargas Llosa's prize was the first Nobel Prize winner of the Dominican Republic.
