The Masacre River, which runs along the northern section of the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, has been placed on the list of prohibited waters for bathing and consumption due to possible contamination by the cholera virus.

The provincial director of Public Health in Dajabon, Rafael Salas Ubiera, said that the measure was introduced as part of the health controls that the Pan-American Health Organization has acknowledged have stemmed the spread of the virus in the DR.

Listin Diario said that in the town of Ouanaminthe (Juana Mendez), located in Haiti just 600 meters across the border from the DR, several people have died from the disease and many others are hospitalized. Local people use the river water for washing clothes and bathing, but many also defecate in the water.

El Nuevo Diario reports that information coming from Haiti says that at least six people died of cholera in Ouanaminthe and Fort Liberte over the weekend. There is no running water or sewage system in Ouanaminthe, so the Masacre Rivers fulfills all these functions instead.
