The Public Health Ministry's official number of cholera cases for 2010 was placed at 148. In a written statement, the Ministry says that all the people who contracted the disease in the Dominican Republic during the last two months of last year are well and back to their normal routines. The ministry press release adds that public awareness of the disease, created through the ministry's public education campaigns, is a major factor, along with good epidemiological awareness and vigilance, in stemming the outbreak locally. The ministry says that the educational campaigns would continue.
The cases are been reported primarily in border provinces, namely Elias Pina, San Juan de la Maguana, Azua, Valverde, Dajabon, Montecristi, Independencia, Bahoruco, but also in Santiago, Santo Domingo East, Maria Trinidad Sanchez, La Altagracia and Monsenor Nouel.
