In the Dominican Republic, the Constitution requires the judges of the Supreme Court to retire at the age of 75. When President Leonel Fernandez convenes the National Council of Magistrates (CNM) before the 26 January deadline, at least seven judges will have to be replaced. Rafael Luciano Pichardo (76), Margarita Tavarez (86), Jose Enrique Hernandez Machado (79), Hugo Alvarez Valencia (87), Julio Ibarra Rios (76), Juan Luperon Vasquez (78) and Pedro Romero Confesor (80) are all past the obligatory retirement age. Article 151 of the new Constitution establishes "the age for obligatory retirement for the judges of the Supreme Court of Justice is seventy-five". The National Council of Magistrates will also have to appoint the judges of the Constitutional Tribunal before the 26 January deadline.
