The havoc caused by the dry season in the country is being felt in the watersheds and reservoirs at the dams on the Duey and Haina-Manoguayabo rivers. The systems produce a large proportion of the water that supplies West Santo Domingo, Los Alcarrizos and the barrios to the south of John F. Kennedy Ave.
The Water and Sewer Corporation of Santo Domingo (CAASD) reported that in the case of the Duey dam, as of yesterday, the water produced for human consumption was 1.68 million gallons, which is 14% below its normal production. Output from the Haina-Manoguayabo dam was at 22.38 million gallons, which represents a 26.22% decrease.
Both systems, supplied from surface waters, are the most vulnerable when the rains are scarce.
The situation in the area got worse after a 12-inch water pipe was broken by the work going on for the Second Metro Line, on Monday, at the intersection of John F. Kennedy and Dr. Defillo St.
CAASD engineers estimated the loss of water from the broken pipe at two million gallons, 25% more than is produced from the Duey dam. The wasted water comes, however, from the Haina-Manoguayabo dam. The broken pipe caused the flooding of one of the trenches for the Metro line.
Yesterday morning, residents of Los Praditos, Los Prados and San Geronimo told Diario Libre reporters that they had not received any water, but apart from this situation, the service had been "normal" in the previous days, with few modifications.
