The provincial offices of senators, almost all representatives of the ruling PLD party, are busy at work collecting signatures for the request for the referendum that would be used to enable President Leonel Fernandez to override the 2010 Constitution. Art. 124 of the Constitution bans presidential re-election. As reported in Hoy, the senator for Hermananas Mirabal province, Luis Rene Canaan said that his office has been working on the task for months now and that it is the PLD party members' legitimate right. The initiative is also being led by San Juan de la Maguana senator, Felix Bautista, who is the PLD's organizational secretary, number 3 in the party hierarchy.
