In a page 2 editorial comment today, Diario Libre editor Ines Aizpun writes about the efforts to push forward a referendum to allow President Leonel Fernandez to run again for the ruling party in the 2012 presidential election. The 2010 Constitution bans consecutive presidential election. "Two million signatures is lots of signatures. And also, if the purpose of collecting them is to violate the Constitution, they are too many," she writes. She comments that lots of effort, time, energy and money is needed to collect two million signatures. "That brings us to think who is willing to finance the process of collecting these house by house...

"Two million signatures to tell the government that yes, prepare for re-election, continue working to violate the Constitution, also the Constitutional Court and if they feel so the Supreme Court Judges who are due to retire at 75 don't have to," she writes.

She criticizes the fact that the political caste is dedicated to all but finding solutions to the real problems of the country -- jobs, poverty, Haiti, education. "No. They want power to have more power and then to have even more power."
