Despite a meeting that government representatives held yesterday with transport union leaders with a view to persuading them to hold back on the fare increases, inter-city passengers on Aetra Bus and Tarea Bus were being charged as much as 40% more per ticket, while talks continue.

Nonetheless, Antonio Marte, representing both bus companies and as president of the Conatra union, told Diario Libre that the increase was being postponed, as well as the 40% scheduled today for his union's urban routes in Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, La Romana and San Juan de la Maguana.

The decision came after a meeting yesterday afternoon with delegates from Caribe Tours, Metro, Expreso Vegano and the Union de Propietarios de Autobuses (Bus Owners' Union) who agreed not to increase their fares after accepting a proposal made by the mediator between the government and the unions, Ignacio Ditren and other officials, to analyze the prices of fuels and other needs that they say cause losses with the President.

The Fenatrano, CNTU and Fenamoto unions also pulled back from increasing "concho" (public cars or shared taxis) fares, while announcing pickets and marches.
