Economist and farmer Frank Tejada said yesterday that the Dominican countryside is affected by a lack of workers from Haiti as a result of the cholera epidemic in the neighboring country. The epidemic has taken more than 3,000 lives in Haiti, according to a report in Hoy. Tejada said that many Haitians are afraid to come back to the Dominican Republic and others are still in hiding for fear of being repatriated. Tejada said that this experience should teach Dominican farmers to be less dependent on Haitian manual labor and to mechanize their crops. He added that mechanization is one way of becoming competitive, as production costs for Dominican crops are very high. He said that his own experience with rice production has proven this.
