President Leonel Fernandez headed yesterday's debates on issues related to the Constitutional Court, ordered by the 2010 Constitution, and that is due to enter into operation in March. Once incorporated, the members of the Constitutional Court will decide on constitutional matters. One of the key issues expected to go up for review by the court is a possible decision by President Leonel Fernandez to run for office in 2012 on the grounds of popular support, despite the 2010 Constitution specifically banning consecutive re-election. The previous 2002 Constitution imposed a lifetime ban on President Fernandez running for President.

The debates took place at President Fernandez's think tank and university, Funglode. On the presiding table were Vice President Rafael Alburquerque and First Lady Margarita Cedeno, who have expressed their aspirations to be the PLD candidate in 2012, and Cardinal Nicolas Lopez Rodriguez, who has gone public expressing doubt President Fernandez would violate the same constitution he had championed.

At President Fernandez's suggestion, a commission was created to hone the critical points of the Constitutional Court. The ruling PLD party holds the legislative majority and will have the main say in choosing the members of the 13-judge court.
