As part of the Duarte Corridor project being built with a loan from Brazil's export promotion bank, works continue with the construction of a second north-south tunnel in the National District (Santo Domingo). The tunnel will run under Ortega y Gasset Avenue to Jose Contreras Avenue. News reports today say the tunnel will be completed by December 2011, weather permitting. Listin Diario reports that this will be the longest tunnel, with a length of 1.2kms and a width of 3.65 meters. It will link the north and south of the city, as the Nunez de Caceres tunnel does in western Santo Domingo. The UASD university tunnel, as it is known, will link Av. 27 de Febrero and Ortega y Gasset with the intersection of Av. Jose Contreras and Calle Santo Tomas de Aquino, in front of the main entrance to the university. It will be 25 meters deep, passing under buildings and constructions in the area. Listin Diario reports that the tunnel is being built using the Austrian Tunneling Method due to the soft ground along the route.
