The Central Electoral Board has announced an extension of the use of the current ID cards (cedulas) into the 2012 election. The JCE says it will use resources to complete the collection of biometric data from 2.4 million citizens. Data from 3.7 million of the 6.1 million citizens estimated to be over 18 years of age has already been collected.

As reported in Hoy, JCE president Roberto Rosario said that holding elections in Haiti had been imprudent in the circumstances of a nation hit by the earthquake and a cholera epidemic. He forecast that the traumatic elections will bring serious political problems for Haiti, and that the Dominican Republic would suffer the consequences. He says that these consequences are already being felt in the shape of a large number of illegal Haitians who are crossing the border and putting a burden on the health system, especially in terms of the number of births at Dominican public hospitals, estimated to make up 40% of all births at least in border hospitals.

Rosario spoke during an event for the signing of a technology cooperation agreement with the Electoral Board of El Salvador to simplify the processes in both countries.
