Members of the 4th Brigade of the army arrested over the weekend a Dominican bus driver who was driving a bus with 17 Haitians, including seven pregnant women from Dajabon. The women said they contracted the ride to give birth in Dominicans hospitals, as reported in Listin Diario. The vehicle passed through checkpoints at Dajabon, Cruce de Chacuey, Puente de Montecristi, Botoncillo, Villa Vasquez and Hatillo Palma, prior to being stopped at the Jicome military checkpoint in Valverde. The stoppage of the bus is a rare occurrence.
Entry of Haitians has been subject to payoffs at the military checkpoints, but with the cholera epidemic, lax controls are finding snags of opposition. So far this year, the military have arrested 237 illegal Haitians in their travels to the DR.
