Former PRD presidential candidate Miguel Vargas Maldonado yesterday formally presented his aspirations to run for President on the PRD ticket in 2012. The declaration was made at the Palacio de los Deportes in Santo Domingo at an event with thousands of his followers. A simultaneous event was held in Santiago in his absence.

The PRD primary is set for 6 March. Vargas Maldonado said he expects to have the support of 82% of the voters in that primary.

"The country needs a President who takes action, and not one who is dedicated to violate the laws, to talk without resolving anything. It does not need one who mocks and chit-chats and is incoherent and does not resolve the urgencies and needs of the people," he said commenting on both President Leonel Fernandez and former President Hipolito Mejia. Mejia also seeks to be the PRD candidate.

He described the present administration as "corrupt, wasteful, insensible and incapable." He said that the Dominican government handles RD$1 billion pesos every day of which he said the "purple plague steals 33 million pesos per hour and only invests 3 million per hour". He said this is one of the most wasteful governments in the world.

In addition to corruption and lack of security, the pre-candidate accused the government of not investing enough in education, health, transport, drinking water, housing and electricity.

Vargas said he is will bring "real change in the way of governing." He identified his lead rival for the PRD ticket, former President Hipolito Mejia, "as a past that we cannot forget."

Vargas Maldonado was Minister of Public Works during President Hipolito Mejia's 2000-2004 government.

Diario Libre reports that 14 minutes after Vargas began his speech, party members began to leave the hall because of the intense heat as the a/c was not working.
