Politicians attending a Central Electoral Board sponsored workshop conceded among themselves that their reputation as an important sector of democracy is weakening.

The International Workshop on Operation, activities and Judicial Framework of Political Parties held at the Hamaca Hotel was sponsored by the JCE and the National Congress.

The need for political parties to renew themselves was a recurring theme by the speakers at the event. These focused on how in the model of politics in the DR clientelism, elitist democracy and democratic populism prevail. Minority parties protested they are being squashed by the majority parties that do not permit them to have delegates in the polling stations, and used their majority to change things at last minute to appoint the five national deputies, posts that had been created to give space to the minority parties.

As reported in Listin Diario, PLD representative Cesar Pina Toribio, Tony Raful for the PRD and Joaquin Ricardo for the PRSC did not focus on the above complaints, but rather on the contributions they said the three parties have made to the institution of democracy in the country. The results of the 2010 AmericasBarometer opinion survey said that Dominicans considered political parties the least credible of institutions.
