A tragic accident occurred yesterday at Km. 36 of the Duarte Highway. The accident again highlights the need for lighting on the highway. 13-year old Veronica de Jesus, her 14-year old cousin Mari Leysi de los Santos de Jesus, and her mother 40-year old Teresa Veras de Jesus were walking on the roadside and were run over by a nun who was traveling to Santo Domingo from Santiago. She lives in the Colonial City in Santo Domingo. She was taken to the Casa del Conductor by Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET) agents and will be sent to justice for involuntary manslaughter.
Diario Libre reports that the accident occurred near the spot where 2010 Latin American idol Martha Heredia killed a Haitian when she was traveling to Santo Domingo in the early hours of 11 December. AMET said that highway lighting was due to be installed.
