On Monday, 17 January legendary pitcher Pedro Martinez of the Red Sox and New York Yankees announced the launch of the Pedro Martinez Youth Academy and Baseball Park during a benefit gala at the Hotel Embajador in Santo Domingo. President Leonel Fernandez and First Lady Margarita Cedeno attended the event.

The project includes a charter school, health services, arts and music programs, plus recreational facilities including basketball and volleyball courts and a baseball park to be called "Little Fenway". Costing an estimated US$3 million, the Youth Academy will go up on land acquired in and around the former site of the very modest house in Manoguayabo, on the hills outside Santo Domingo where Pedro Martinez grew up.

The project also includes the construction of a technical community college, said to be the most advanced in the country. He said his dream was to develop players to the point where they can play exhibition games against US schools like Boston College or Boston University.

Martinez already works closely with his wife, journalist Carolina Cruz to educate over 500 children in San Miguel, in Manoguayabo.

Thirty-nine year old Pedro Martinez, who compiled a 219-100 record with a 2.93 ERA in 18 seasons, is the only Dominican to have won three Cy Young awards. In his MLB career he has played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Montreal Expos, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies and is considered a future Hall of Famer.
