President Leonel Fernandez has decorated US businessman Charles Follet with the order of Christopher Columbus for his socially responsible apparel factory in Villa Altagracia.
Alta Gracia clothing items are for sale at university bookstores in the US and are manufactured by the company that pays way above regular sewing wages.
The "fair labor" model pays 130 unionized workers a wage that is three times the local minimum wage - US$114 per week, versus US$33. The increase enables workers to provide adequate food, clean water, clothing, shelter, health care, childcare and education for themselves and their families - in short, a living wage.
