The Ministry of Public Health has concluded that while 25-year old Leodany Montero Medina had contracted cholera, it was not the cause of his death. Hoy newspaper reveals that doctors at the Institute of Forensic Medicine headed by Dr. Sergio Sarita Valdez reported that the cause of death was most likely a pulmonary edema that aggravated a cardiogenic heart that could not supply sufficient blood to the organs.

Dr. Sarita was accompanied by the Minister of Health, Dr. Bautista Rojas Gomez as he presented the results of the autopsy. Dr. Rojas Gomez said that the body was sent for autopsy because of the sudden manner in which the patient, only 25 years of age, had died, especially since he had recovered from the cholera attack. The case made headlines because it would have been the first death from cholera in the DR.
