The Santiago regional business association, meeting under the aegis of the Council for the Strategic Development (CDES) in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, rejected a proposal that sought to divide the city of Santiago as suggested by PRD deputy Giovanny Tejada, who has received support from other legislators.

Representing the Santiago business community, Carlos Alfredo Fondeur said during a press conference that he rejected the "fractioning" of the city, because the legislative initiative does not fit into the project of municipal organization or the city organization. He argued that the proposal by deputy Tejada is expected to go forward without the necessary study of territorial feasibility and violating the commitments signed with the leading sectors of the city of Santiago.

Fondeur warned that the CDES will use all the resources that the law and the Constitution provide, including the Law of Protection in order to oppose the initiative by the PRD deputy.

Diario Libre quoted the business leader as saying that the Dominican Republic has an excessive number of provinces, municipalities, municipal districts and subdivisions for a half-island of barely 48,000 km2. "On the contrary, a compression and reduction of the territorial subdivisions is needed since the scarce resources that the Dominican state has available do not allow for the luxury of excessive expenses nor the number of inorganic officials derived from the accumulation of territorial divisions," Fondeur said.

At a press conference held in the Entrepreneur Building, the senator for Santiago, Julio Cesar Valentin, mayor Gilberto Serulle and the governor, Raul Martinez were on hand and they supported Fondeur in rejecting the PRD deputy's proposal.
