The Federacion Nacional de Transporte Dominicano (Fenatrado) has announced a new 30% hike in freight cargo transportation rates. The truck owners union said the increase is in response to fuel cost increases. Fenatrado secretary general Blas Peralta announced the increase on the heels of the recent meeting between President Leonel Fernandez and bus and public taxi owners unions at the Presidential Palace. At the meeting, the government promised millions of pesos worth in perks and subsidies to the transporters for these to postpone passenger fare increases.
Fenatrado is known to violently impose their services on customers who need to transport freight domestically. The government has yet to act to impede the monopolistic actions of the truck owners union. Freedom to contract transporters would considerably reduce costs for industries and local businesses.
