The playoffs will be played in the east. Last night, in a special, one-game final of the round robin, the Estrellas Orientales defeated the resurgent Gigantes del Cibao and crushed their hopes for another playoff. The Estrellas Orientales won the game 3-0, after a three-run rally in the fifth inning decided things for the hometown Estrellas. Their starting pitcher, Eulalio de la Cruz surprised everyone with a stellar performance, shutting out the powerhouse lineup of the Gigantes for 5 2/3 innings, limiting them to just three hits. He was followed by Wilkin Arias and Marcos Mateo, who completed the shutout. Mateo struck out five of the six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth innings. For the Toros it is their fourth playoff. They are seeking their second championship.

On a side note, there was extra security around the Tetelo Vargas stadium in order to prevent any incidents. And, of course, the black market ticket hawkers had a field day, selling RD$400 seats for RD$1,500, but this did not keep the fans away as they arrived early and filled it to capacity. Some came with special palm branches to "sweep away the evil spirits".
